Spacious yet cozy, the cottage is an idyllic spot for a family vacation, a romantic escape, or a peaceful retreat. The cottage and the main house share a driveway and are connected by a covered walk. They also share beach access and the beach. However, the cottage has a secluded outdoor area onto which both the kitchen and living room doors open, perfect for quiet reading, grilling, cocktail hour, or just hours gazing at the ocean.
The cottage has 3 bedrooms with beds for up to 7 people. There are two bathroom.
Originally built as a stable by the horse-loving CEO of Nabisco who first turned the property into a summer estate in the early 20th century, the cottage was converted into a house in the late 1920s by its new owner. It underwent major renovations again in the 1970s, but the wood-paneled living room with its captain’s wheel chandelier is original to 20s.
The kitchen overlooks the ocean—I’ve never found a more inspiring spot for vegetable chopping. It opens up to an airy dining room on one side and an outdoor sitting and grilling area on the other, so whether you're dining indoor or out, it's easy to keep an eye on the stove. Also on the first floor is a bedroom overlooking the water with a queen sized bed, a bathroom with a shower and tub, and a bedroom with a single bed, it’s own entrance, and gorgeous late-afternoon light.
Upstairs is one large room with windows in all four directions. You can watch the sun rise over the Atlantic without getting out of the king bed, while your children remain in a double bed tucked in an alcove away from the light. The upstairs also has it’s own bathroom with a claw-foot bathtub.
Although there are two steps to enter the house, the cottage's proximity to the driveway and its two downstairs bedrooms make the house relatively easy for those who have difficulty walking.
